T.G.I.F Redefined

People get excited at Fridays for a variety of reasons. For some its the prospect of a restful weekend, others like the free time to catch up with friends, family, chores etc. This euphoria at the impending weekend is so pervasive, it has inspired a popular saying ‘Thank God Its Friday’ more commonly known as TGIF.

TGIF has inspired many elements of pop culture including songs, clubs and even a chain of restaurants. I’m seeking to put a new spin on TGIF through the lens of an event more extraordinary than having 2 free days to catch up on laundry or our favorite tv shows. On a friday centuries ago, represented symbolically today(April 22nd 2011), Jesus died on the cross to bridge the gap between God and mankind, buy us back from the enemy, to bring many sons to glory and offer us the opportunity and privilege to be just like Him (Hebrews 2:10).

The course of history and mankind have been so radically altered by the friday on which Jesus died, so much so that time is measured with reference to His birth and time on earth( Before Christ – BC and Anno Domini( in the year of our Lord); and so TGIF becomes more than just the promise of 2 days of rest, it offers the chance of eternal rest, new life, forgiveness of sins and friendship with God.

On Good friday, Jesus offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, battled the forces of darkness for our sakes,  declared that all that was required for our salvation was finished, and then sat down(symbolizing rest and completion) at the right hand of God inviting whoever wills to come be a part of God’s family(Hebrews 10:12,Revelation 22:17, John 19:30).

I’m infinitely grateful for the privilege to be Gods’ adopted,I’m ineffably thankful that Jesus in obedience to the Father gave His life as the ultimate sacrifice, and eternally glad that the Holy spirit dwells in me assuring me that I belong to God.

So I thank God its good friday, and not just because Jesus died, but because 2 days later He arose in the most triumphant display of victory over the enemy – for if they had known Good Friday would lead to Resurrection Sunday, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8).

Happy good friday fam., I hope you have a great weekend and that those who dont know Jesus, get to meet and experience Him as Lord and Saviour and they can join us to truly TGFGF (Thank God For Good Friday).

Much love…Shalom fam. 🙂
